Piotr Szyhalski is a Polish-born, US-based artist. Trained in Poland as a poster designer, Szyhalski has been living in Minneapolis since 1994, where he teaches at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. He was interviewed for the Rail in the July-August 2020 Field Notes about his work as an artist responding to political events. At that time his focus was on the COVID-19 pandemic and the George Floyd Rebellion. About his current efforts, he writes:
The 2020 Report Project started as a way of witnessing the pandemic experience, a way of processing that world. The ICE occupation brought about a different set of concerns for me. The Banner Project is much more directly rooted in the communal experience, and a way of thinking about art as a means of amplifying voices of community. As an artist I assess my ability to be present tin this moment in the most meaningful way I can. And the banners felt like the right kind of engagement for this moment.
