I was fortunate to meet Richard a number of times over the years. The most memorable being at the top of Mount Vesuvius. I was with my husband, Marcus, and my young son. We had all hiked up there early in the morning to avoid the sun. Richard and my family stood at the edge of the crater and marveled at its size and potential energy. Later that day we met and talked about sculpture in a way that was both grand and naïve—flat, heavy, curve, angle, side etc. He was a master of the unsaid.
