Rhea L. Combs

Rhea L. Combs is the director of curatorial affairs at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC.

In 2024 Tyler Mitchell traveled to coastal Georgia to create a new body of work. Mitchell’s intent was to discover moments occurring naturally, spontaneously, and in that way to create photographs that communicate in a layered, complex fashion. On the occasion of Ghost Images, Rhea L. Combs spoke to the artist as they toured his exhibition.
