Richard Serra relentlessly worked to push boundaries around the definition of sculpture. Deploying an extraordinary weight and measure of steel was one way he accomplished that. LACMA’s enormous, weighty, long, and sinuous sculpture titled Band (2006), generously donated by Edythe and Eli Broad, is a perfect example.
