Leah Modigliani

Leah Modigliani is Associate Professor of Visual Studies at Tyler School of Art and Architecture. She is the author of Engendering an avant-garde: the unsettled landscapes of Vancouver photo-conceptualism (2018) and Counter-Revanchist Art in the Global City: Walls, Blockades, and Barricades as Repertoires of Creative Action (2023).

Like a magician, or John Baldessari’s pointing fingers, Duchamp was adept at focusing his viewers’ attention at what he wanted. This methodology of misdirection was powerful for a time, and has reached its apogee in contemporary politics, corpocratic media, and “personal” technologies.
