Klara Glowczewska is Town & Country’s Executive Travel Editor. She is a former Editor-in-Chief of Conde Nast Traveler and the English-language translator, from the Polish, of three books by Ryszard Kapuściński: Imperium, The Shadow of the Sun, and Travels with Herodotus.
As Paul Theroux, one of the great practitioners of the genre, once explained: “Travel writing is about being a stranger in a strange land. It’s about what you notice when you don’t belong.” When you don’t know whereof you write—or at least, you are not sure, not yet.
