Joanna Pawlik

Dr Joanna Pawlik is Senior Lecturer and Subject Head in the department of Art History at the University of Sussex (2014–). Her monograph Remade in America: Surrealist Art, Activism and Politics 1940–1978 (University of California Press, 2021) was co-winner of the 2021 MSA first book prize. She is currently completing her second book, Draw the Line: Figuring anti-fascism in American art, 1961–1980 and has published widely on surrealism, postwar American art and visual culture, transnationalism, regionalism, and little magazines.

Assertions of Surrealism’s obsolescence stalked its arrival on American shores in the years following the publication of the “First Manifesto” in Paris, 1924.
