Art criticism and art history are not two entirely different kinds of endeavor for they are both critical undertakings. They both seek to evaluate the critical worth of items their practitioners—and others—present as artworks.
Artists and theorists in the Western tradition have long fed off one another’s work. Some of the most prominent theorists have themselves been artists, although few who might have considered themselves principally to be theorists have claimed to make art of any kind.
We often read that art galleries are intimidating, that they do not welcome people of the “wrong” class or ethnicity.
