This summer, we are celebrating the sections of the Brooklyn Rail with conversations, performances, and readings curated by our editors. This 2-week YouTube video series offers a view behind the scenes with the editors, artists, and writers that make the publication.

On Tuesday, July 27, Film editors Edward Charles Mendez and Laura Jane Valenza are joined by writers Harrison Blackman and Ella Turenne for a conversation on film criticism.

Check out the other events this week devoted to our sections DanceTheaterPoetry, and Fiction. Register below to one, some, or all of these events to receive selected materials for each episode.

Harrison Blackman

Harrison Blackman is a writer and editor based in Los Angeles. Known as “a shamus of a tiger sort” at Princeton, he cut his teeth as a cub reporter in Taos, New Mexico and elevated his craft with an MFA in fiction at the University of Nevada, Reno and a Fulbright in the divided nation of Cyprus. With experience from the newsroom to the writers’ room, his work often follows noir-stained journalists out of their depth in international intrigue across the Eastern Mediterranean, or wayward architects struggling to build the world of tomorrow—whatever comes first.

Ella Turenne
