On Monday, July 26, Dance editor Gillian Jakab is joined by New York Times dance critic and Rail contributor Siobhan Burke and Rail contributor Noa Weiss for a conversation on the state of dance criticism and how it has been affected throughout the pandemic.

Siobhan Burke

Writer Siobhan Burke lives in New York City. Since 2013 she has been a dance critic for the New York Times and a contributing writer for Dance Magazine. She has written for the Brooklyn Rail, Critical Correspondence, Cultured, Open Space, The Village Voice, Artforum.com, and other publications. She was a 2013 USC Annenberg/Getty Arts Journalism Fellow and received a 2018 Creative Capital/Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant. As a dancer, Siobhan performed with the North American touring company of Riverdance and with artists including Hadley Smith, RoseAnne Spradlin, Jillian Sweeney, Rebecca Warner, and Narcissister. She teaches at Barnard College.

Noa Weiss

Dancer, writer, and arts administrator Noa Rui-Piin Weiss is based in New York City. He has performed works by Doug Varone, Bill T. Jones, Caroline Fermin, and Lucinda Childs, among others. Noa has presented choreography through Fertile Ground and the Current Showcase (Take.5), and recently collaborated with Adrienne Truscott on his thesis project “Jack of All Trades.” As an administrator, Noa has worked at The Joyce Theater, The Kitchen, Dance/NYC, and the Jerome Robbins Dance Division of the New York Public Library. Noa is a regular contributor to the Brooklyn Rail and Culturebot, where he writes about performance.

    Gillian Jakab

    Dance editor of the Brooklyn Rail Gillian Jakab is also associate editor of Gagosian Quarterly. Her writing on dance and other topics has appeared in these publications, among others. She holds a BA from the University of Michigan and a MA from Columbia University. She was raised and lives in Brooklyn.
