Artist, educator, and abolitionist Anna Martine Whitehead joins Rail contributor Re'al Christian for a conversation.

Anna Martine Whitehead creates performances on the homelands of the Council of the Three Fires: he Odawa, Ojibwe and Potawatomi Nations; as well as the Miami, Ho-Chunk, Sauk and Meskwaki; the Kiikaapoi, Peoria, and the Očeti Šakówiŋ (Sioux) Nations. Their solo and collaborative work has been featured at venues like the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art, REDCAT, MoMA, and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Martine has worked with artists such as Takahiro Yamamoto, Onye Ozuzu, and Keith Hennessy. Their work has been supported by the New England Foundation for the Arts, Graham Foundation, and more. Martine has written on blackness, queerness, and performance in publications like Queer Dance and Platforms. They are also the author of TREASURE | My Black Rupture (Thread Makes Blanket, 2016).

Re'al Christian is a writer, critic, editor, and art historian based in Queens. Her work explores issues related to identity, diasporas, ecology, media, and materiality. Her criticism, essays, and interviews have appeared in BOMBBrooklyn RailArt in AmericaArtforum, and ART PAPERS, where she's a Contributing Editor. She has written texts for catalogues and anthologies. She is the editor of the digital publishing series Post/doc (2022–present) and co-editor of the anthology As for Protocols (2025). Christian is the Assistant Director of Editorial Initiatives at the Vera List Center for Art and Politics at The New School. She received her MA in Art History from Hunter College. She holds a bachelor’s degree from NYU, where she majored in Art History and Media, Culture, and Communication.
