On Tuesday, July 27, Film editors Edward Charles Mendez and Laura Jane Valenza are joined by writers Harrison Blackman and Ella Turenne for a conversation on film criticism.

Harrison Blackman

Harrison Blackman
Writer, editor, and journalist Harrison Blackman is based in Reno, Nevada. He graduated from Princeton University and earned an MFA from the University of Nevada, Reno. A Fulbright Scholar, Harrison’s work has also been supported by grants from the Lewis Center for the Arts and the Truman Library Institute. His writing has appeared in such publications as The Oxford Climate Review, the Brooklyn Rail, CrimeReads, and The Santa Fe New Mexican; he also consults on film and TV projects.

Ella Turenne

Ella Turenne
Artist and entrepreneur Ella Turenne is a champion of freedom, justice, and expression. She is currently a doctoral student in Visual Studies at UC Irvine as well as Director of Training and Development for Inspire Justice. Ella has been acting since the age of 5 and since performed in an array of theatrical works including On Striver’s Row, Raft of the Medusa, and most recently Come Back to Me, featured in New York’s Fresh Fruit Play Festival. Her film woodshed was an official selection of various national film festivals including the Hollywood Black Film Festival and the Montréal International Haitian Film Festival, where it was nominated for Best Short Film. In 2019, The Haitian Roundtable inducted her into the 1804 List Of Haitian-American Changemakers.

Edward Charles Mendez

Edward Charles Mendez
PhD student in Visual Studies at the University of California, Irvine, Edward Mendez is editor of the film section for the Brooklyn Rail.

Laura Jane Valenza

Laura Jane Valenza
Writer Laura Valenza’s fiction has appeared in Lady/Liberty/Lit and Visual Verse. She majored in art history at New York University. She is editor of the film section for the Brooklyn Rail.
