Gregory Gilbert

Gregory Gilbert is Professor of Art History at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois and specializes in the art of Robert Motherwell. He is the author of the article “Robert Motherwell’s World War II Collages: Signifying War as Topical Spectacle in Abstract Expressionist Art” and the entry on Motherwell in the Routledge Encyclopedia of Modernism. He is currently researching a book on the relation of Motherwell’s early art to Pragmatism and modern American poetry.

Motherwell’s Early Drawings and Pragmatist Perception

While he experimented with mixed media approaches throughout his career, he tended to ascribe specific aesthetic and technical values to each of these areas of practice, as Katy Rogers noted in the catalogue raisonné of his drawings.
