Dr. Tina Rivers Ryan

Dr. Tina Rivers Ryan is Curator at the Buffalo AKG Art Museum (formerly Albright-Knox Art Gallery) in Buffalo, New York, as well as an art historian and critic focused on the history of art and technology since the 1960s. Her recent exhibitions include 2021’s Difference Machines: Technology and Identity in Contemporary Art (currently on a national tour) and 2022’s Peer to Peer, the first US museum survey of artists engaged with blockchain technologies. She has received the Association of Art Museum Curators Award for Excellence and an Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant, and was named to Artnet’s Innovators List in 2022.

Aesthetics

I don’t remember the first time a digital artwork made me cry, but of the many times it has happened, I remember a few quite clearly. One of the most memorable was in 2018, when I was viewing Christiane Paul’s important historical survey at the Whitney Museum, Programmed: Rules, Codes, and Choreographies in Art, 1965–2018.
