INCITING EXPERIENCE

I met my fiancé on a dance floor, at an open-air discotheque in Europe. The other people were standing around, in groups of two or three, but their stasis had no impact on us. Fixated upon each other, we danced intently.

WORLD REMAKING IN KATHY WESTWATER’S PARK

If the current environmental crisis proves anything, it is how unnatural “nature” actually is. Which is to say, how increasingly what has been perceived as “natural” is contingent on human involvement and error. Kathy Westwater’s latest work, PARK, conceived in collaboration with poet Jennifer Scappettone, extends her preoccupations with the horrors of the body, a subject which she explored in her 2008 work Macho.

DANCING ON SCREEN, BIG AND SMALL

In like a lion, out like a lamb—but for dance-loving New Yorkers, this March also promises three anticipated film events. ONE PLUS ONE EQUALS WONDERMENT JUDITH SÁNCHEZ RUIZ AND SOULEYMANE BADOLO AT DANSPACE PROJECT

It doesn’t get much more personal than this. Dancer/choreographers Judith Sánchez Ruiz and Souleymane Badolo performing solos at St. Marks Church, low lit, spotlit, and minimally, yet poignantly accompanied.

EMERGENT CHOREOGRAPHERS IMPRESS AT FRESH TRACKS 2010

In the circles I run in, there was a lot of excitement over this year’s Fresh Tracks roster. Dance Theater Workshop’s emerging artist series has sometimes been scrutinized for a liberal interpretation of “emerging,” including artists with relatively high visibility despite the array of choreographers in New York clamoring to be seen.
